English: The Global Language
ENGLISH IS A GERMANIC LANGUAGE OF THE INDO-EUROPEAN FAMILY. It is the language of the Anglo-Saxon world, as well as the lingua franca of the globalized age. Despite its Germanic origins, English has been heavily influenced by French and other Romantic languages.
Some of the unique characteristics of English include the dummy subject (owning to the prominence given to the subject), the widespread use of phrasal verbs, articles and prepositions (due to the lack of inflection). There is a high number of vowels compared to some other languages. Those vowels are represented by an alphabet which is far from a perfect match, making spelling a challenge even for native speakers.
